Trek Description

Har ki dun or as it is more commonly called, “the valley of gods”, is a cradle shaped valley in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, in the midst of the Garhwal Himalayas. This majestic trail follows the gleaming stream of the Supin River, populated by villages, of over 3000 years old. The valley lies under the watchful eye of the Swargorohini peak, and if myths are to be believed, the Pandavas, followed the same trail on their journey to ascend to the heavens.

The valley is situated at a height of 3,500 m and is covered with snow from october to march. Located at the base of Fateh Parvat, this lush valley, covered in Alpine forests, is rich in fauna and a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers. The valley falls under Govind Pashu Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary, and is rich in wildlife. The trek commences from osla and passes through dense forests of chestnut, walnut, chinar and willow. Another attraction of the trail is the Jaundhar Glacier, which is a short trek away from the valley. The Har Ki Dun , catchment area, is the major source of the Yamuna river basin , and the origin point of the largest tributary of Yamuna, the Ton river. This trail also offers the captivating views of Banderpanch and the Swargarohini group, Kalanag and the Har Ki Dun peak itself. But the main allure of the trek is perhaps the local culture. This area being one of the most unexplored areas of the Garhwal, houses an ancient culture, uncorrupted by the modern civilisation. Local legends tell this area to be under the rule of the Pandavas and Kauravas of the epic Mahabharatha. Interestingly, the people of Mori are followers of the Kauravas, considered the anti-heroes of the epic. There is also a temple dedicated to Duryadhana, the crown prince of the Kauravas. This heavenly valley, steeped in mythology which is accesable throughout the year, is really a compelling place to visit for trekkers.
